This season, we’re inviting everyone to join in.
Why Pollinator Plants Matter
Pollinators bees, butterflies, hummingbirds play a huge role in keeping our ecosystems healthy. They help plants reproduce, support local food systems and bring life to our neighbourhoods.
The best part? You don’t need a backyard.
A sunny patio, balcony or even a small planter box can make a difference.
Easy Patio-Friendly Pollinator Plants
In Vancouver’s climate, these are simple, beginner-friendly options:
•Lavender
•Coneflower (Echinacea)
•Black-eyed Susans
•Herbs like thyme, oregano, and chives
•Native wildflowers
They’re hardy, low-maintenance and loved by pollinators.
Rudimentary Gardening Tips (No Green Thumb Required)
•Choose a pot with drainage holes.
•Use good-quality potting soil.
•Most pollinator plants love full sun (6+hours).
•Water deeply but not constantly, let the top layer dry slightly between waterings.
•Avoid pesticides so pollinators stay safe.
That’s it. Simple and doable.
There’s something grounding about tending to a small patch of life. It slows us down. It connects us to where we live. It quite literally helps us put down roots.
